SalesMarketingCommunicationSupportAutomation

Vonage is a Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) that lets your agents send SMS, WhatsApp, Viber, RCS, and Messenger messages, place and receive voice calls, verify identities with OTP, and spin up video sessions — all through a single authenticated API. Connect Vonage to Actionist and your agents can fire OTP challenges before high-value transactions, broadcast order updates across six messaging channels simultaneously, route inbound calls based on CRM data, and capture every delivery receipt without a human touching a dashboard.

SMS triage: turn every complaint into a case

When a customer complaint email hits Gmail, your agent checks the sender's phone number against the CRM, fires a Vonage SMS acknowledging receipt within 90 seconds, and opens a Zendesk ticket — before the customer has refreshed their inbox. It then posts the case link to the support Slack channel and books a follow-up slot on the team calendar so nothing slips through. First-response SLA compliance happens automatically, every time.

How to plug Vonage into Actionist

Pick the connection method that suits your environment.

The fastest path to Vonage's full API surface. Install the official Vonage documentation MCP server and the agent gains instant access to SMS, voice, verify, and messaging APIs — no credential juggling, no SDK setup.

1
Open the Apps tab

Find Vonage in the Apps library and click Connect. MCP is selected by default.

2
Authorise with your Vonage API key

When prompted, enter your Vonage API Key and API Secret from the Vonage Dashboard (dashboard.nexmo.com → Settings → API Settings). The MCP server stores these server-side; they never touch your local machine.

FAQs

Questions about Vonage + Actionist

How do I connect Vonage to Actionist?
Open the Apps tab, find Vonage, and click Connect. Paste your API Key and API Secret from the Vonage Dashboard (dashboard.nexmo.com → Settings → API Settings). Actionist verifies the credentials with a live balance check and you're ready to use all 15 actions and 7 trigger events immediately.
What credentials does the Vonage connection require?
You need two values from the Vonage Dashboard: your API Key (an 8-character alphanumeric string) and your API Secret. Both live at dashboard.nexmo.com under your account name → Settings → API Settings. The secret can be rotated from the same page without changing the key.
Can I combine Vonage with other apps in Actionist workflows?
Yes — every Vonage action and trigger composes with the full Actionist app library. Common pairings: HubSpot (fire SMS on deal events), Google Sheets (bulk-send from a subscriber list), Zendesk (SMS-acknowledge inbound complaints), and Notion (OTP-gate high-value finance approvals). The workflow builder shows compatible steps as you build.
Which messaging channels does Vonage support?
Through Vonage's Messages API, the agent can send and receive on SMS, WhatsApp Business, Facebook Messenger, Viber Service Messages, and RCS. Voice calls and video sessions use the separate Voice API and Video API (formerly TokBox OpenTok). All channels share the same Vonage API Key credentials.
How does Vonage Verify work for OTP flows?
The Verify API runs a two-step flow: first call 'Initiate Verify request' with the recipient's number; Vonage dispatches an OTP via SMS or voice call and returns a request ID. Then call 'Check Verify code' with the ID and the user-supplied code. A returned status of 'approved' confirms identity. The request expires after a configurable window, and 'Cancel Verify request' lets you abort it early if the user abandons the flow.
How do I avoid sending to invalid or unreachable numbers?
Run 'Number lookup' before any outbound send. The Vonage Number Insight API returns line type (mobile, landline, VoIP), carrier, and reachability status. Filter out VoIP or disconnected numbers before adding them to a send queue — this avoids charges for undeliverable messages and keeps your sender reputation healthy with carriers.
What happens if a Vonage SMS fails to deliver?
The 'SMS delivery report' trigger fires with a status of 'failed', 'expired', or 'rejected' alongside an error code. Route failed-delivery events to an alternative channel — WhatsApp or voice call — using a conditional branch in your workflow. Vonage does not retry automatically; the retry logic lives in your Actionist workflow.
Can Vonage triggers cause a feedback loop if the agent replies to its own messages?
Yes, if an agent's outbound SMS arrives on the same virtual number that has an inbound-SMS trigger, it creates a loop. Prevent this by routing agent-sent messages from a dedicated sender number that is not registered as a trigger source, or by filtering the 'Inbound SMS received' event against a blocklist of your own Vonage numbers before the workflow proceeds.
